2022 has been a tough year for many of us. Whilst we’re all craving a good break over Christmas - and it will come - one of the best ways we can guarantee that 2023 is a better year, is to channel that New Year mentality now.

When we think of December, we associate it with celebrations, delicious food, and get-togethers with friends and family. Exercise doesn’t always enter the equation. But staying active and consistent with your workouts is a great way to end the year feeling your best, counteract any holiday stress and mindfully do something good for your body.

Many of us tend to put any hopes of starting a consistent fitness plan on the back burner until January, but with 80% of New Year’s resolutions failing, we're just setting ourselves up for failure. If you give up now, putting your training shoes on in January will feel even harder.

Today is exactly 6 weeks until Christmas Eve. Why not embrace the next 6 weeks and challenge yourself to get ahead of the game in 2023? That way, you can enjoy a Christmas blowout, sit around enjoying mince pies and watch Christmas flicks - with zero training guilt.

Time to put 2022 woes to bed and start channelling fresh 2023 energy⚡

Why it’s important to start now

Put simply: for a happy and healthier 2023.

Here’s why: sticking to your workout regime in December relieves the New Year pressure. As many people avoid working out altogether during December, any progress you make will count as a success. Come January, you will be way ahead of all the gym-goers who shelved their fitness plans throughout Christmas.

Workout in the gym? December is by far the quietest time of the year. With nearly everyone else out overindulging from mid-November onwards, it’s the best time to get the gym to yourself.

Temptation is a given at this time of year, but there’s a positive. Put the extra calories to good use by training hard and building muscle where you want to see it. Even if your goal is to lose fat and tone up, you need muscle there in the first place to tone. So start now, and January will be infinitely easier.

Most of us will experience at least one hangover between now and Christmas, and all of us are likely to feel tired and lethargic on shorter days. Finding time to fit in some regular training will help stimulate the release of endorphins, release the Christmas stress, keep you motivated and feel less guilty about over-indulging over Christmas.

Finally, get your exercise in to help boost your immune system. How many times have you ended up sick over the Christmas break? Exercise boosts your immune system and significantly reduces your chances of illness - it pays to invest in yourself now and have a better break as a result.

How to make it easy for yourself

Finding time to train regularly will boost endorphins which, when combined with well-balanced nutrition, will help increase your energy levels, reduce stress, improve sleep and keep you focused and motivated.

Here are a few proven ways to make it easier:

  • Choose a goal that challenges you but also don’t commit to training 4 times a week if you know you don’t have the time
  • If you’re training early, don’t hit the snooze button - read our tips on how to get moving in the winter mornings
  • Choose exercises that you enjoy
  • Don’t touch your diet unless you want to, just choose one goal
  • If you do want to look at your nutrition, see food as fuel rather than empty calories
  • Get an Another Round coach to support you
  • Get at least one workout in by Wednesday, don’t leave it all until the weekend
  • Establish a routine that you plan out, stick to and can commit to - plan your week ahead on a Sunday
  • Find your why, remind yourself why you’re even doing this in the first place

Finding time to look after yourself in December will help you start 2023 with a bang, mega-focused, in great shape and ready to tackle bigger goals than just getting rid of the Christmas excess.

Most people will struggle with limited time and a lot of temptation at this time of year but with a little planning, the festive season can be enjoyed and healthy. By training smartly, you can maintain your fitness and arrive at the New Year feeling happy and healthy.
